
Master Chen Tongshan – Shaolin Martial Arts Grandmaster
Master Chen Tongshan is a highly respected Shaolin martial arts grandmaster and holder of the prestigious 9th Duan in Chinese Wushu. Born in Dengfeng, Henan Province—the home of Shaolin Temple—he has devoted his life to preserving, teaching, and promoting the essence of authentic Shaolin Kung Fu both in China and worldwide.
A Life Dedicated to Shaolin Kung Fu
Master Chen began training in martial arts at just eight years old, studying under his father and uncle. By the age of fifteen, he had already mastered more than twenty Shaolin traditional forms and weapons, with particular expertise in Black Tiger Fist. He later refined his skills under the legendary Shaolin master Hao Shizhai, where he specialised in long weapons and the Dharma Staff.
Milestones & Achievements
Throughout his career, Master Chen has earned national recognition and international respect for his martial arts excellence and leadership:
- Champion in multiple provincial and national martial arts competitions.
Appointed Principal of the Shaolin Temple Martial Arts School at just 21 years old. - Founded the Shaolin Martial Arts Performance Troupe, touring more than 30 countries including the USA, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and the Philippines to spread Shaolin culture.
- In 1998, he established China’s first children’s martial arts academy, setting new standards for youth training.
- Invested in the growth of martial arts education, creating new campuses in both Dengfeng and Zhengzhou.
- Featured in CCTV documentaries such as Kung Fu Shaolin and the instructional series Chinese Wuzang.
- Honoured with titles including “Shaolin Eighteen Arhats”, Shaolin Martial Arts Master, and Outstanding Contributor to Henan Wushu.
Teaching & Legacy
Master Chen has trained thousands of students, many of whom have gone on to become masters, champions, and cultural ambassadors themselves—including the world-famous actor and martial artist Shi Xiaolong.
