What to Bring

Packing for your training in China is all about being practical, comfortable, and prepared. This list will help you decide what to bring — but remember, many everyday items can be purchased locally at affordable prices.

Essential Documents

  • Passport photos – Needed for school registration and local police requirements
  • Passport & visa – Make sure your visa covers the duration of your stay
  • Medical information – If you take prescription medication, bring an adequate supply along with a doctor’s note or medical certificate

Clothing for Training & Everyday Wear

China’s seasons can vary greatly, so pack with the weather in mind.

Summer training

  • Loose-fitting, breathable trousers or shorts
  • Lightweight, moisture-wicking t-shirts
  • Plenty of underwear, plus light thermal underwear for cooler evenings

Winter training

  • Warm sweaters and jackets that still allow freedom of movement
  • Tracksuits and thermal underwear
  • Layers for easy adjustment to indoor and outdoor temperatures

Footwear

  • Running shoes – For jogging and endurance work
  • Martial arts shoes – Thin-soled shoes such as Feiyue (available locally at low cost)
  • If you already have specialised martial arts shoes, bring them along

Training Support Gear

  • Joint protection: knee pads and elbow pads to help prevent injuries
  • Sports attire for varied training sessions
  • Towels for personal use

Health & Personal Care

  • Travel pharmacy with your personal medication
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent (especially in summer)
  • Any vitamins or supplements you regularly take

Optional Personal Items

  • Diary or notebook to record your training progress
  • Small comfort items from home (snacks, photos, or a favourite mug)
  • Light reading material for downtime

Items Better Bought in China

Some essentials are not included in your monthly fee — this is common in China — but they can be bought easily and cheaply in the nearest town or at the school shop:

  • Laundry detergent
  • Soap and toiletries
  • Toilet paper

Bedding

We provide bedding and pillowcases so you can travel lighter. These are kept clean and in good condition according to Chinese standards (which may differ slightly from what you are used to).

Shopping & Extras

Zhengzhou and the surrounding area offer a wide variety of shops, including international stores where you can find some Western groceries and familiar brands. However, we encourage students to focus on the unique cultural experience — training, personal growth, and exploring the richness of Chinese life.

Tip: If you pack with the mindset that this is a martial arts academy — not a holiday resort — you’ll bring exactly what you need and nothing you don’t.
