Master Chen Tong Chuan – Shaolin Kung Fu Master & Educator

Master Chen Tong Chuan (born 1967 in Dengfeng, Henan Province) is a highly respected Shaolin martial arts master, holder of the official 7th Duan in Chinese Wushu, and Principal of the Shaolin Xiaolong Martial Arts School. With over four decades of teaching, performance, and international exchange, he is recognised as one of the leading figures in the promotion of authentic Shaolin Kung Fu worldwide.

Early Training & Martial Arts Expertise

Chen Tong Chuan began training in martial arts from a young age under his father, Chen Chengwen, and was later guided by the abbot of the Shaolin Temple. He quickly became skilled in traditional Shaolin styles, including Shaolin Cannon Fist, Datongbei Boxing, and iconic weapons such as the Shaolin Meteor Hammer.

In 1978, together with his elder brother, he opened a martial arts class in his home village, laying the foundation for his lifelong career in teaching. By 1985, he was appointed Head Coach of the Shaolin Temple Martial Arts School, already recognised for his mastery and leadership.

Achievements & Recognition

Over the years, Master Chen has achieved numerous accolades, including:

  • Multiple national titles – Gold medals in both Long Weapons and Soft Weapons at China’s leading martial arts competitions.
  • International teaching – Invited by the State Sports General Administration in 1997 to teach Shaolin Kung Fu to the Prince of Brunei.
  • “Eighteen Arhats of Shaolin” – Awarded this prestigious title in 2000 by the Dengfeng Sports Committee.
  • CCTV features – Appeared in several national documentaries and educational series, including Kung Fu Shaolin and Chinese Wuzang.
  • Leadership roles – Vice President of the Henan Shaolin Boxing Research Association, Vice Chairman of the Dengfeng Shaolin Wushu Association, and honoured as one of Henan Wushu’s Top Ten Figures of the Year.

Promoting Shaolin Martial Arts Worldwide

Master Chen has led delegations and training tours to over 20 countries and regions, including the Philippines, Malaysia, Canada, and Hong Kong. Through international performances, workshops, and cultural exchanges, he has played a vital role in spreading Shaolin Kung Fu culture to the world.

Teaching & Legacy

Today, as Principal and Head Coach of the Shaolin Xiaolong Martial Arts School, Master Chen continues to guide thousands of students in the spirit of Shaolin tradition—emphasising discipline, respect, health, and cultural heritage.

His disciples include many accomplished martial artists, such as Wang Mawan, Huang Zhiwu, Ding Feng, Qiao Hongliang, and Chen Baotang, who now carry forward his teachings in China and abroad.
